My Work Experience at a Marketing Agency- Red Ant Solutions

Hello! My name is Kayleigh and I’m going to give you an insight into what it was like to work for Red Ant Solutions.

What is it like to work for a marketing agency?

I’m currently at the University of Birmingham studying Business Management with Marketing. I decided to work with Red Ant Solutions to gain perspective on what it’s really like to work within a marketing agency and to gain experience unlike what university could offer me.

I would say if you want to find out what marketing is like then applying to marketing agencies can really be of benefit to you. You have the opportunity to work with a range of clients and get a feel for what sort of work interests you as well as industries. It’s been really useful for me to identify what I actually prefer working on. Another advantage of work experience is that you are more likely to be successful in the selection processes for jobs.

My time at RAS (4 weeks full time) has been really informative and best of all the team has been super accommodating. In my first meet up with Jennifer Jenkins, the Digital Marketing Manager, I told her that social media was something I wanted to work with most. I’ve been very lucky to have social media as my focus during my time here but I have also been taught about other related topics, such as SEO.

What does working in digital marketing involve?

During my first couple of days here my work was mainly focused on research into social media and competitors. I appreciated this because it allowed me to ease into other work with more confidence.

A lot of my time was spent designing social media schedules for clients, but I started by looking at RAS’ social networks. It was exciting and educational to look at a mix of profiles because tone and content can really vary depending on what the business is. I’ve discovered that I definitely prefer working with the more light hearted and conversational profiles.

I’ve also been trained and given an overview on certain SEO and social media tools such as Hootsuite, Google Analytics and SEMrush. Although SEO has been a lot harder to understand than social I’m glad

I’ve covered the Writing blogs and creating infographics for social mediabasics of it. It’s really important to have knowledge of and I think that will really help me in the future.

I have also written a blog on social media and made an infographic to go with it. This was a little different but I enjoyed it as I was given the freedom to write what I wanted, within reason.

How has my experience helped my future goals and career?

Experience is so useful right now because most of what I have learned here I wouldn’t even touch in my university course. I definitely feel with the skills I have learned and improved on I will be more employable in the future.

I’m also more confident about what direction I want to go towards for my future career. Although, I don’t think I’ll ever be certain. I think that’s why I enjoyed the agency work so much as my day always varied. Work experience is therefore a great opportunity to trial run whether a particular area is for you or not.

It’s been amazing working with Red Ant Solutions and I can’t be more grateful to them giving me this opportunity. To finish I’m going to leave you with one of my favourite quotes I found while working on RAS’ Facebook posts:

Estée Lauder quote, success in marketing work experience
